Art Rogue Gets Plugged in Tennessean's Article About Starting an Art Collection
Holly Deese from the Tennessean newspaper wrote an excellent article about starting an art collection and some of the myths and hurdles involved.
I originally contacted Holly when she put out a call to collectors and artists to offer insight into beginning an art collection. She came to our July First Saturday Gallery Crawl and chatted with artists, gallery staff, and patrons. Unfortunately for me she brought a photographer. I’m not the most photogenic creature.
The article offers some good tips for the emerging collector and reminds the reader that the process does not have to be intimidating or expensive. Gallery owners and staff are there to help you along.
“There are a lot of young buyers here because we have an urban edge and a price point for those just starting out,” says Chad Hollingsworth, owner of Take 121 Arts. Hollingsworth also offers layaway and payment plans, another lure for young buyers on a budget. In the Arcade downtown, a number of artist-owned galleries have opened, including Art Rogue by Matt Mikulla, who offers his artwork online as well, another lure for young collectors.
“If a blogger picks me up and he is well-read, my online sales will go up,” Mikulla says. He also runs sales online and promotes lower-priced items.
