Do What You Don't Want to Do

First, let me start by saying there are things that you don’t want to do and shouldn’t. Many of these things are immoral, wrong, or just plain stupid. You know, like robbing a bank or drunk dialing your ex. What I am talking about here are the things that we should be doing, but don’t want to.

A few years back I immersed myself in physical fitness and martial arts. My weekly regiment was martial arts training 5-6 days a week, weight lifting 3 days a week, and running 3 days a week. There were days that I missed, but for the most part, I stuck it out. To do all of this while working a full time job and working on my artwork required something more than discipline and ambition. It required me to do what I didn’t want to do.

Friday nights were reserved for sparring. Since we were a reality based self defense school we studied everything of value. Subjects included: boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, grappling, weapons, etc. The problem was there was no set schedule for styles and ranges and our instructor Blake, would usually take a vote on what we wanted to do. I didn’t like boxing because it was my weakest game and getting punched in the head sucks. However, in the back of my mind I knew that I had to learn boxxing to excel. I would always raise my hand in favor of boxxing when the class was asked “what to do next?”.

Let’s face it. There is alot of shit we have to each day to stay on top of our game. Pay bills, follow up emails, finish boring projects, etc. The list goes on and often overwhelms. The one thing that I have learned and often forget is we all must do what we don’t want to do.

I always feel much better after I get the seemingly painful things out of the way and I can move on to things I enjoy.

Damn, I need punched in the head right now.
