Laurie Lipton Drawings at TAG Art Gallery
The drawings of Laurie Lipton are simply amazing. She is no doubt a master of her craft at a time when very few artists pursue the drawing medium. In fact, she was the first to graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a Fine Arts Degree in drawing.
When I walked in to TAG Art Gallery, here in Nashville, I nearly fudged my huggies. Everything from materials like wood and glass to people and architecture is rendered perfectly. The drawings are realistic in a fantastical way and they fold you in layer after layer through several dimensions.
Laurie is not only a master technician but a story teller as well. I'm a sucker for a good story and It's great to see a visual artist use narrative in such an effective and emotive way.
I've seen the last 30 TAG shows and all have blown me away. Jerry Dale McFadden is one of the best contemporary art curators and this show was easily my favorite so far.
