New Artwork for November's First Saturday Gallery Crawl and Artrageous
November’s First Saturday Gallery Crawl is just a day away and I have been busy creating twelve new images for the series Hot Cars and Fast Women . Artrageous, a benefit for AIDS education and services, is the following Saturday, November 10th. It should be a busy art event month for Nashville and I know the community has been working it’s ass off. I know I have.
The series “Hot Cars and Fast Women” is not necessarily about cars or women, but more about fashion. I just thought it was a cool title for a series and you wouldn’t believe the amount of website traffic I get from people who google the phrase “Hot Women and Fast Cars”. Seriously, who searches for that? They are either very disappointed or pleasantly surprised when they reach my site.
The style for the series started way back in 1999 when I was living in Whitefish Montana. I was studying color photography at Flathead Community College and was experimenting with different films, developing, and camera techniques. The technique used for this body of work is called “multiple exposures”. This basically means I just use a simple film camera and expose one frame of film several times before advancing to the next frame. I try my best to compose the image in my head first and then in the camera. It’s a creative way to make interesting images without the fancy pants technology of photoshop layers.
The concept or rules of the series are simple. I photograph window displays of department stores, boutiques, or any shop that displays clothing, jewelry, or interesting items.
